The decade from 1710 to 1720 marked the peak of Stradivari's Golden Period. A fine example from this period, dated 1716, was donated to the Paris Conservatory of Music by Mme. Provigny at the beginning of the last century. The Provigny Stradivari was exhibited in Cremona, Italy, during the summer and fall of 1987 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the death of Stradivari. It is illustrated in the catalog of that exhibit.
While studying in Italy, Dr. Ervin was privileged to have frequent access to the instruments in that Paris collection. He chose the Provigny Stradivari to study and copy from among five great Stradivaris in the Conservatory Museum because of its surpassing beauty of shape and sound. He made this violin for Yoichi Udagawa, a professional musician and conductor. Its dimensions are: length 356 mm, width upper bouts 167 mm, width lower bouts 207 mm.
